Experimenting with PureData

Blog

I've been experimenting with PureData over the last week, and wrote a patch for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment. (The Disquiet Junto "is a collaborative music-making space in which restraints are used as a springboard for creativity. It is produced in association with Disquiet.com". For more information, see http://soundcloud.com/groups/disquiet-junto/info)

The assignment for the Junto this week was as follows:

"This week's project takes the opportunity to focus on the art movement known as Fluxus. We'll use as the starting point a 1955 composition by Yoko Ono. Her work is titled "Lighting Piece" and it consists of a single, simple sentence: "Light a match and watch till it goes out." It is one of a number of pieces that Ono produced as part of Fluxus. For this week's Disquiet Junto project, please interpret her instruction as closely or as loosely as you choose."

Freaky Dancing - Part 2

Mixes and sets

A fairly intense mix of bizarre and eclectic tunes designed to make you dance in a frantic, jerking, tribal, and ultimately embarrassing fashion. The idea was to upset the usual flow of a mix and make it rhythmically disjointed but still somehow flow into a cohesive whole.

This mix is for AWOLGina, with thanks for all her support, inspiration and encouragement. Hope you enjoy it, Gina!

50 tracks spread over 3 hours and 20 minutes. This is the second half of the mix.

Part 1 of the mix is here.

Keeping It Real

Mixes and sets

A circular mix (it can be played in a loop) of some hip-hop and rap favourites.

Naturally it contains lots of bad language and unpleasant behaviour.

The aim was to keep this danceable and fun, but not just fill it with chart hits.

Electronic Industrial Mixed Bag of Nuts mix by AWOLGina

Check out this fantastic mix by AWOLGina on Mixcloud - it's great fun and introduced me to several wonderful artists I've never heard of before (contains explicit lyrics):

Funky Funky Christmas

Mixes and sets

The artwork was rushed to get this project finished; I wanted to do four separate Christmas mixes before the end of Christmas Eve. I don't personally like Christmas music, and I don't celebrate Christmas, so it was a bit more of a challenge than usual. (I'm not against it, I just don't take part in it). I wanted to see what I could come up with as an alternative to all the usual stuff you hear, without making a load of 'anti-Christmas' mixes, which I figured no-one would want to hear.

This is a circular mix - if you listen to it on a loop, the end should bring you back to the beginning fairly smoothly.

The Run DMC track is in the only 'Christmas' film I enjoy watching - Die Hard.

A Bit Less Cynical at Christmas

Mixes and sets

The follow-up/companion to 'Cynical at Christmas'. As promised, this is a bit less cynical, but still 'alternative' and avoiding most cliches. Chuck Berry is allowed, because, alongside with Half Man Half Biscuit, he has written and performed the OTHER TWO 'Greatest Christmas Songs Ever' (namely Merry Christmas Baby and Run Rudolph Run).

This is, musically at least, a little more 'feel good' than the 'Cynical' mix, and aiming for a general positivity without resorting to cheap sentiment.

Dark Christmas - Part 2

Mixes and sets

A dark/gothic Christmas mix for people who like dark folk, drone, gothic atmospheres and a touch of avant-garde. Liking Christmas is entirely optional. If you feel that Wham!'s 'Last Christmas' is where it's at for Christmas music, then you're probably not going to like this very much.

The picture *IS* Christmas-y; it is adapted from Wikipedia, and is of Krampus. See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus

Part 1 is louder and more 'rock'. The two parts were made as one mix, but split up for people who might prefer one half to the other.

Dark Christmas - Part 1

Mixes and sets

A dark/gothic Christmas mix for people who like dark, heavy rock with a bit of freaky experimentalism.

The picture *IS* Christmas-y; it is adapted from Wikipedia, and is of Krampus. See here:

Part 2 is quieter but darker. The two parts were made as one mix, but split up for people who might prefer one half to the other.

Cynical At Christmas Mix

Mixes and sets

A mix for people who don't enjoy Yule/Christmas/Solstice/etc.

THIS IS *NOT* SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN, and NOT SAFE FOR WORK. (Due to Beans on Toast, Tales from the Crypt, Tiny Tim, Zoogz Rift and Allen Ginsberg).

Vocal Beauty

Mixes and sets

After moving house, writing a book, coding a DVD, making furniture and getting over illness, I finally managed to get a mix posted again. Hopefully, things will continue to improve, and I'll get time to get some more up over the next few weeks...

Shitty Rave Music (featuring Henry Rollins and DJ Fuckhead)

My remixes

This is a tribute to and parody of Henry Rollins, DJs, and rave/dance music in general. I love Henry Rollins' work, but I also love dance music, and felt the need to both defend DJs and yet at the same time prove Rollins' point - so I completed the track in a few hours, including uploading.

The idea was to make SHITTY rave music, not great rave music.

Belladrum Space Mix 04 – Hippyish/Semi-Random

Mixes and sets

Circular mix made for the 'Space' theme for Belladrum festival 2011. This mix was made to be played on repeat on a CD, rather than just from beginning to end.

It was used in the Around group's stall to provide both atmosphere and entertainment. (The Around group are an eclectic fusion of artists, of which I am a part. There are around 20 or so people in the group, ranging from painters and sculptors to wood carvers and musicians. See http://www.around.org.uk/ for more information.)

Acoustic Reverb demos 8th June 2011

My music

We've just uploaded a new Acoustic Reverb demo - check it out on our Soundcloud page:

Acoustic Reverb demos by DJ Kaboodle

The demos were recorded live on the 8th June 2011, and were mixed, amplified, burned and printed to CD, including designing and printing the cover art, within 8 hours.

Drunk on Music

Mixes and sets

Another drinking compilation!

This one takes the form of the journey of a night of drinking: from initial high expectations through self doubt, over-confidence, and ultimately becoming incomprehensible... but still having a good time.

It is an EU regulation that one out of every three drinking-themed mixes or compilations must include either The Pogues or Shane MacGowan.

(NB: Troll Bends Fir (Troll Gnet El) are generally categorised as 'Russian Beer Folk' - a genre I hope to investigate more one day).

Daddy Go Down to the Ghetto and Spread Your Love

Mixes and sets

Random, on-the-spot mix for a kind of groovy, funky, fun night. A couple of bits of swearing, so not safe for work or children (unless you skip Black Grape and Ghostface Killah).

I would like to think that this is the first time that Kenny Rogers, Ghostface Killah and Ghetto Plotz have all been featured together in a mix, but maybe someone can prove me wrong...

Burning Mixes to CD [How-To]

Blog

I noticed that there aren't many good methods for burning DJ mixes to CDs, and that there are many parts of the process that are confusing or difficult. This post will attempt to redress that - however, I only use Linux, Audacity for editing, and K3b for burning CDs - so if you use a different operating system, audio editor or burning program, you will need to adapt the tips and processes mentioned here.
